JOB REQUIREMENTS ANALYSIS

 

POSITION TITLE: Data Analyst

EMPLOYEE UNIT: Classified Professional          

FUNDING SOURCE: General Operating

FUNCTIONAL AREA: Instructional Support

REPORTS TO: Director of Technology  

SUPERVISES: NONE

STATUS: Full-time, Exempt, Hours worked per day = 8, Contract days per year = 261

 

NORMAL WORK DAY:  Varies, but based upon an eight hour work day, however flexibility with working hours may be required as necessary.

  

OBJECTIVE:

Collaborate with department and District staff to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the District’s data collection, reporting and analysis practices.  Collaborates with District staff to automate and integrate systems to introduce capabilities and create efficiencies.  Develops robust reporting and visualization capabilities to support the instructional and operational needs of the District.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

 

  1. Provides timely and effective reporting and data management support to all district staff.
  2. Designs data dashboards at the direction of the Director of Technology, in collaboration with other staff as required.
  3. Coordinates and implements responses to data management/reporting/visualization requests from District staff.
  4. Develops digital guides, courses, and other training materials to support staff development relating to data entry, reporting, and visualization procedures, practices, and capabilities.
  5. Develops and implements regular communications to district staff relating to data-related topics including, but not limited to, deadlines, changes, system maintenance, report availability, and integrations.
  6. Manage or Assist with projects related to state and federal student/staff data collections
    1. State Student Identification System 
    2. Student Reporting in Iowa (SRI); 3 times per year
    3. Civil Rights Data Collection; as required by the Federal Department of Education
  1. Keeps abreast of current trends in database management, reporting, interoperability, and visualization.
  2. Effective verbal and written communication with district directors, building administrators, staff, students, and parents, will occasionally need to address small and large groups.
  3. Must be a team player and able to work effectively alongside other members of the Tech department and district staff.
  4. Attend school board/staff or district meetings as necessary. 
  5. Maintain confidentiality when working with student or staff files at all times and follow and maintain knowledge of all District policies and procedures.
  6. Be willing to travel for training as assigned by the school district.
  7. Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education, social sciences, data science, computer science or statistics.  Master’s degree preferred.
  • Two years of successful classroom instruction experience at the K-12 level or in the context of adult education is strongly preferred. 
  • A demonstrated ability to learn multiple software packages and/or programming languages is required. 
  • Knowledge of a subset of reporting and visualization software (i.e., Visio, Excel, Power BI, Tableau, Hoonuit, G-Suite), data management and research software (i.e., Excel, G-Suite, SPSS, SAS, R), databases (i.e., Microsoft SQL, MySQL, Oracle), and/or programming (i.e., XML, VBA, VB Script, PHP, Python, Java) is preferred. 
  • Must demonstrate a code of ethics and maintain the highest standards of confidentiality in dealing with sensitive data and proprietary information.
  • Ability to understand complex support documentation and procedures, and to implement necessary procedures successfully. 
  • Exceptional problem solving, written and verbal communication, organization, and interpersonal skills. 
  • Experience with PowerSchool Student Information System (SIS) or an equivalent SIS preferred. 
  • Experience with project management, including the ability to facilitate communication between technical and non-technical users of data and systems is preferred.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while working with computers, written materials, reports, data, etc.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. workday.  The employee will frequently work in different areas of the building including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement, etc.  The employee will usually work in indoor temperatures.
