Muscatine Schools is hiring Substitute Custodial Maintenance workers. Substitutes have the flexibility to work on an as-needed basis, as work is available. Substitutes will fill in for the Custodians/Maintenance Workers who are absent in the building on a daily basis and may be asked to fill longer-term assignments as needed.

 

Substitute Custodial Maintenance workers are paid on an hourly basis. The rate of pay for these positions is $17.66/hour.

JOB REQUIREMENTS ANALYSIS

 

POSITION TITLE:              Substitute Custodian

EMPLOYEE UNIT:             Custodial/Maintenance 

REPORTS TO:                     Custodial/Maintenance Supervisor(s) and Building Principal

SUPERVISES:                      None

 

Normal Work Day: Shifts and days vary by building and by position

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

The function of the Substitute Custodian’s job is to keep the school’s appearance clean, safe and in good working order. Duties will vary by season, grade level, and activity usage but include, and are not limited to:

 

DAILY DUTIES:

  • Checks to ensure all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy.
  • Raises the American flag at or before 8:00 a.m. and lowers it at or after 3:30 p.m. (practice varies by shift and school).
  • Cleans classrooms and corridors as scheduled.
  • Scrubs and disinfects rest room floors, shower rooms where applicable and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains.
  • Reports major repairs needed promptly according to the standard procedure of the department.
  • Reports any damage to school property which would include any vandalism or break-ins according to the standard procedure of the department.
  • Remains on school premises during paid hours except for lunch breaks.
  • Shares responsibility for opening and closing of building (doors and windows secured, lights off except those left on for safety). Substitute Custodians are to perform lock-downs along with other employees who are equally responsible for insuring the building is secure.
  • Adjusts furniture periodically and as needed to meet student needs in the classroom.
  • Cleans chalkboards and/or whiteboards as needed.

 

WEEKLY DUTIES:

  • Dusts furniture and locker tops as time allows, with emphasis first to computer labs.
  • Keeps floors clean and clear and in a good state of preservation by wet mopping and sweeping regularly between scheduled stripping, waxing and buffing.
  • Changes accessible filters as needed or as scheduled.

 

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Washes windows inside and out as time and weather permits. Washes door panels, lockers and wall areas as needed, ensuring as a top priority that school entrances are clean and presentable.
  • Keeps building premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean.
  • Notifies maintenance of irregularities in heat, ventilation, or air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure economical use of fuel, water, and electricity.
  • Seasonal: removes snow and ice from grounds, shovels, salts, plows, sands, mows, and clears litter and rubbish.
  • Locker repair and maintenance.
  • Performs yard keeping chores and picks up litter as time permits.
  • Keeps inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel and notifies courier or operating department for requisition.
  • Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required.
  • Complies with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste.
  • Makes minor building repairs as time, materials, tools and knowledge allow, calling Supervisor or seeking other assistance if needed.

 

Knowledge, skills and abilities required to carry out the job satisfactorily:

  • Position requires excellent attendance
  • Good oral and written communication
  • Specific skill expertise:
    • Carpet care
    • Scrubbing floors/halls including waxing and sealing
    • Sanitizing rest rooms
    • Use of different chemicals
    • Training in fire extinguisher use
    • Knowledge of the building’s fire alarm system
    • Operation of floor care machinery including scrubber/buffers, carpet extractor etc.
    • Basic hand tools, drills, lawn mowers, trimmers, snow blowers etc.

Other factors:

  • Must be very reliable to assume responsibility to secure building
  • Must be able to work efficiently and effectively with a large variety of people and must genuinely enjoy working around children
  • Ability to assist in the enforcement of fire codes

 

SUMMER WORK:

The following duties are examples of what is required of the Custodial/Maintenance department during the summer throughout the district, though these duties may or may not occur each summer at each building:

  • Painting, sanding, washing walls, changing light bulbs, cleaning filters, repairing desks and chairs, stripping floors, refinish/wax floors, steaming clean kitchens, washing furniture
  • In-depth cleaning of areas that require moving of furniture
  • Other duties of a similar nature to be assigned as needed

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The District requires knowledge of equipment and cleaning products used in cleaning building.

 

Bilingual preferred or highly desirable.

 

LOCATION: Assignment varies by position but a Substitute Custodian is required to assist in all District buildings as needed.

 

AMERICAN DISABILITY ACT STATEMENT:

Employee must be mobile and able to perform a wide variety of manual tasks involving repetition and lifting of items of up to 55 pounds. Substitute Custodians are required to spend the majority of the day bending, stooping, twisting and lifting. Throughout the District there are buildings with multiple levels, which requires a Substitute Custodian to carry materials up and down the stairs. Substitute Custodians should seek assistance with physical duties when needed.

The employee must be capable of carrying an 8 ft. step ladder a distance of 50 feet and go up and down the ladder to a height of 4 rungs multiple times. Must be capable of pushing 50 lbs. a distance of 25 feet. Must be capable of shoveling for minutes at a time. The employee in this position lifts/carries 55 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, and pushes with a maximum force of 50 lbs. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while working with computers, written materials, reports, etc.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical 8:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. workday. The employee will frequently work in different areas of the building including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement while working indoors or outdoors.  The employee will usually work in indoor temperatures but will work outdoors as duties require.

A. Job Postings
Whenever a job opening occurs, other than a temporary opening as defined below, in any
existing job classification or as the result of the development of a new job classification, a
notice of such an opening shall be posted on the district’s website for a minimum of five
(5) working days, unless extenuating circumstances require fewer days. The notice shall
include rate of pay, classification title, closing date, and minimum qualifications required
for the job. Minimum qualifications may include successful testing, physical demands,
working environment, bilingual skills and other minimum qualifications.
Applicants, who wish to apply for the opening including employees and employees on
layoff from any classification, may do so. The district shall fill the opening, after
interviewing the top applicants, by selecting from the applicant pool the candidate it
believes who most closely matches the requirements of the position. Employees who are
