Muscatine Schools is hiring a Bus Driver for the Transportation Department. Route times can vary, beginning any time between approximately 6:45am and 7am and ending around 8:30am (AM route). PM routes can begin between 2:30pm and 3pm and end around 5pm. A School Bus Driver's main responsibility is the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school and related activities. 

 

Daily Drivers have the opportunity to drive hourly midday routes in addition to their daily routes. Bus Drivers are assigned to work during the school year only (9 months/year) but may have the opportunity to drive during the summer for summer programs and related activities. Daily Bus Drivers are paid a rate of $117.00/day. Midday routes as paid on an hourly basis starting at $29.25/hour. 

 

The candidate chosen for hire will need to complete a background check, pre-employment drug screen and have passed/completed all DOT school bus driver requirements and hold all applicable licensing/certifications. Onboarding and training is required through the HR Department prior to working as a Bus Driver with Muscatine Schools.

POSITION TITLE:              Bus Driver (Regular Route, Special Ed Route & Activity Trips)

REPORTS TO:                     Transportation Supervisor

 

Normal Work Day Begins:   Varies by route or trip

 

OBJECTIVE:

To provide students with safe and efficient transportation to and from school, including related activities.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Drive the routes and or trips as assigned without deviation(s) unless authorized to do so or because of a specific emergency, allowing common sense to dictate otherwise for that specific incident.
  • Works with a variety of students, parents, guardians and school personnel.
  • Maintain discipline and control on the bus at stops, transfer stations and while in operation; this includes the Muscatine School Discipline Program.
  • Maintain assigned bus by completing daily inspections and other pre-trip duties, notifying mechanics of any and all mechanical problems.
  • Maintain driver records such as time cards, physicals, school permits.
  • Monitor radio and provide radio communication as needed.
  • May meet with the Special Education teachers to review a student’s disabilities and how the Driver might better meet the student’s needs as well as improve behavior on the bus.
  • Other duties of a similar nature to be assigned as needed.

 

LOCATION:  Transportation Center

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must meet State and Federal DOT requirements plus additional training required by the Muscatine School District for regular education or special education route drivers; CDL, bus permit, valid physical, alcohol and drug screens as required by applicable federal or state regulations. Completion of a criminal background check including child and dependent adult abuse registry check. Physical and chauffeurs license and state permit. Computer skills useful for maintaining routing and student database computer systems. Bilingual preferred or highly desirable.

  • Regular attendance to ensure consistency for students

  • Knowledgeable about State and Federal laws and regulations regarding student transportation
  • Proficient in school bus equipment maintenance and operation
  • Flexibility with changing route schedules, stops, and other changes

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle and/or feel objects, tools or controls; talk and hear.  The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and forward 0 to 24 inches and on occasion up to 36 inches.  The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp items.  The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds 0 to 12 feet and occasionally up to 20 feet, such as curriculum materials, desks, chairs, and boxes.  The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables and carts.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while supervising students and working with computers, written materials, reports, assessment data, etc.

 

Driver may be required to lift and move 75 lbs up to 50 feet. Driver may be required to reposition equipment such as wheelchair with a 160 lb. load.  

 

The job may require exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. workday.

 

The Substitute will move, stand, squat on an assortment of surfaces including tile, wood, terrazzo, and concrete.  The Substitute will be required to work outside during hot or cold weather, rain snow, sleet and icy conditions while performing their duties.  The Substitute will stand and move on surfaces that are damp.
