Normal Workday:    All members of the unit work an 8.0 hour work day which includes a duty free 25 minute lunch. 

 

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  Must possess appropriate credentials from State of Iowa to be under contract with a public school district in Iowa.  Current License to practice nursing in the State of Iowa, Iowa Driver’s License, and CPR Certification.

 

OBJECTIVE:           

The prime objective of the position is to provide for the health and safety of our students.

 

The school nurses of Muscatine School District met in 2000 and reviewed Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Effective Teaching which contains four domains and twenty-two elements. The nurses adopted the following as their expectations. The district supports this effort and has adopted them as the evaluation criteria and guiding principles for our nurses.

School nurse displays comprehensive understanding of health and wellness.

      School nurse displays basic knowledge of nursing process.

      School nurse assesses each individual’s knowledge and abilities; and encourages self-management of health needs.

      School nurse displays basic knowledge of the diversity of cultural heritage of each individual and incorporates that information into health interventions.

      The value of wellness is recognized and wellness programming is incorporated into practice.

      School nurse is aware of school, district and community health resources; and how to access their services.

      Health plans are designed and implemented to facilitate management of individual health needs.

School nurse displays basic knowledge of human growth and development. 



The health services environment:

School nurse interactions reflect warmth, caring and mutual respect.

Confidentiality is maintained within the health services environment and school setting.

School nurse acts as a resource person for obtaining and evaluating health education materials.

Muscatine Community School District policies and procedures are adhered to.

School nurse provides supervision for secretaries and aides.

Administers medication and treatment prescribed by physicians

Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students requiring nursing intervention.

Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics and other agencies on student health matters.

Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.

Conducts training for students and staff related to handicap, health, and hygiene.

Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.

Trains secretaries and health associates in the administration of medications.

Maintains school, state, and federal records as required by appropriate code.

      Efficient systems for maintenance of health records and secure storage of medications are in place.

      Emergency and non-emergency interactions are effectively managed utilizing nursing process.

 

Health services interventions/health education/wellness:

 

      School nurse communicates clearly and accurately via written and oral means.

      School nurse refers and engages community and school resources as indicated.

      School nurse provides appropriate health education and wellness opportunities to individuals and/or groups.

      Professional practice is within Muscatine Community School District policies and procedures as well as Iowa Board of Nursing regulations.

 

Professional responsibilities:

 

      School nurses practice within the regulations of the Iowa Board of Nursing, including licensure.

      All elements of practice reflect nursing process.

      School nurse’s system for maintaining health services records is accurate and effective.

      School nurse participates in Medicaid administrative claiming.

      School nurse communicates with families, staff, community and education teams as appropriate and in a timely manner.

      School nurse participates in and contributes to school and district activities.

      School nurse participates in professional growth opportunities.

      Support and collaboration characterize all professional relationships.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle and/or feel objects, tools or controls; talk and hear.  The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and forward 0 to 24 inches and on occasion up to 36 inches.  The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp items.  The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds 0 to 12 feet and occasionally up to 20 feet, such as curriculum materials, desks, chairs, and boxes.  The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables and carts.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while supervising students and working with computers, written materials, reports, assessment data, etc.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.  The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. workday.  The employee will frequently work in different areas of the classroom including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement while supervising indoor and outdoor activities, etc.  The employee will usually work in indoor temperatures but will work outdoors when supervising students outside of the classroom.
